Before you can import your subscriber list, you must first create a file.
It is required to have the fields Email Address and Subscriber Key. You can also include First Name, Last Name, and Status fields.
Note: Email addresses that are invalid or appear on the Marketing Cloud global unsubscribe list will not be imported.
When preparing your import file:
- Scrub your data for accuracy. Align left and right to make sure spaces are removed.
- Remove any blank lines.
- Add a subscriber key column and create a subscriber key (emailaddress.MID). See below for how to easily create subscriber keys in Excel.
In your Excel file, enter email addresses in Column A, and label the column Email Address. Label Column B as Subscriber Key. Select Formulas from the Excel toolbar.
Click on the Subscriber Key cell that is next to the first email address. In this case, it should be B2. Then select Insert Function (ƒx).
In the Insert Function window, select CONCATENATE then click OK.
Function Arguments or Formula Builder will open. Ensure that there are at least three "text" areas. Enter them as the following:
text1: A2 (or the cell where the first email resides)
text2: . (period)
text3:MID# (the 7-digit number of the Business Unit)
Click OK or Done when finished.
The subscriber key will generate in the cell. To apply the subscriber key formula to the other email addresses, hover over the bottom right corner of the cell. When the arrow becomes a cross, double click. A subscriber key for each email address will be created.
